Ubuntu SUCKS

Just so you know, I am a big fan of linux and I use linux exclusively.

I was also going to be enthusiastic about using Ubuntu as the linux for ordinary people.
Then two things went wrong for Ubuntu. They were the last two (yes two) Ubuntu releases.

The 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" release didn't boot on my laptop. Because the shifted to a different mode of accessing the hard disk (IDE disks are now also handled like SATA and SCSI disks).

But, by installing a previous version and "upgrading all the way" I could still run this version.

Then the 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" was released. Hah. Improvement. It boots on my laptop. Unfortunately there are still (other) problems with accessing the harddisk. Ubuntu turns OFF the hard disk's DMA, this gives me a 'sustained' disk read speed of just over 2MB per second. When I boot with my regular linux distribution (Slackware 12.0) I get speeds of over 38MB per second, on the same device.

When I issue the command to turn DMA on: hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda, this FAILS and tells me I do not have permission to set this parameter. Come again? I am 'root' the absolute master of all things on this system.

On the internet several possible work-arounds are given. None work (although I think that it is still related to using the SATA drivers to drive my standard IDE harddisk).

This means that for the last two releases Ubuntu, the Linux for Ordinary People was flawed in such a way that it became all but unusable for 'ordinary people'.

UPDATE (2008-11-03)
I have since written much more about Ubuntu (version 8.04 and 8.10)
  1. Giving it another go
  2. Changing the window manger (no GNOME, no KDE)
  3. Made it my main system
  4. The Upgrade! (to Ubuntu 8.10)

Yea ... I'm a Linux user also !
I was using UBUNTU for about 2 years ... It works alright until the constant upgrades break the system some how . It just got me pissed . I went on to the Gnome version of PCLinuxOS ... Less updates . Very fast and stable . I also use Debian . UBUNTU is based on Debian . But Debian has less updates . It's faster AND more stable also ! I also use FreeBSD !

Oh my - I installed UBUNTU today May08 for first time - after my Debian-harddrive went on fire after like 10 years - I didnt have enough time to install a decent Debiansystem do I`m stranded on this "nightmare".

Some things piss me of - I wanna be the master as root - and on my system only root should be root - so I tried to delete the default user, after having the rootaccess opened by "sudo user passwd root" and root COULDNT DELETE EVERYTHING!!! a home/user/.something was not permited to delete by root

I had similar problems with Ubuntu's recent updates breaking my system. I was using 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I searched the net and found others also sometimes end up with broken systems with some Ubuntu upgrades. I've been using Linux since practically the beginning and am quite experienced. I went back to SuSE 10.3, much improved now since its original release. Works great for me. Frankly, I don't miss Ubuntu in the least.

Sorry - I'd say ubuntu sucks and windows rules.

I install ubuntu and my gfx card wont work properly, my raid setup wont work at all, most of the progs I use dont work at all and theres no linux equivalent - if there is you need to bugger around with a command line for a hour to get it half working, my sound card wont work, I can't sync any nokia phones, or window mobile PDAs.

I install windows and it all works - no hassle - it just works - I don't need to fck around with a terminal, and programs are named sensibly so you know what they are intead of being called erhlahlkjdsfgh or some shizzle.

I know loads of you will hate me for that, and I'm cool with that!
